A Bigger Logo Does Not Mean A Better Logo
This article is about logo designing and discusses the importance of a properly designed logo and the negative impact of a large sized logo design.
Logo is the identity of any business and it reflects the individuality of a brand. Quality logos can create visual impact and an everlasting impression on people’s minds. A logo design can consist of only graphics, only text, or a combination of graphics and text.
Interestingly, when a client asks a designer to design a logo for his company, most of the times he asks for a big logo. Seldom does a business owner understand that a logo is supposed to create a unique identity and not be a blown-up graphic design.
Size is not everything- Logos, if properly designed, can enhance a company’s business and increase brand recall among the present and potential customers. It can also ruin a company’s reputation if it creates a negative impact on customers. It’s true, size does matter in some cases, but it’s not a “must” when it comes to creating a logo design.
On the contrary, a large logo can mar the image of an organization. Many business owners have a fixed idea that a large logo will impress the target market. Logo plays a big role in creating visual impact and branding, but not necessarily does it have to big to make an impression.
Big logos are distracting- When the size of a logo is too large, it practically irritates the customers. Large logos annoy audiences when they are advertised or marketed in traditional or online media.
Space is good- Most times, a logo has a text message with it. If you make the graphics jumbo size, it pushes the important content aside. If the space gets properly distributed among the logo and the text message, it can easily deliver the message and create an instant connection with targeted customers.
Organizations should therefore concentrate on properly getting a message across instead of haranguing over the size of graphics with logo designers. A large logo and small, invisible tagline, rarely works.
Negative Space Pleases Eyes- Clients often get irritated if they see blank spaces in a logo’s design. They feel its doing no good and wasting valuable space. They request the designer to fill the blank space with something to make it more appealing. What they don’t understand is that this blank space, or negative space, actually heightens the aesthetic beauty of the logo. It provides relief to the eyes.
There are no steadfast rules to logo designing for creativity matters the most. Apple and Nike have small logos, yet they have established strong connections with their audiences. On the contrary, McDonalds flashes their humongous logo everywhere but enjoys equal brand recognition globally.
What companies need to understand before designing their logos is their business criteria. If McDonalds made a fortune and created unique brand identity, it does not mean that a large logo will do the same for them.
