Features that Make Google+ Stand Apart from Other Social Media Networks
Google stepped into the world of social media by introducing its brainchild Google+ in the mid of this year. Since then Google has been bringing constant improvements, trying to bring about more ways in which Google+ could become more user friendly, secure, and a reliable choice of the users.
Since its launch, online marketers have been examining it and finding features that make it different from other social medial platform, more specifically Facebook. The feature that has made Google+ stand apart from other social media platforms is the ‘Circles’ it provides, this is where Face book lags behind.
The Flaw in Facebook:
Friend management is one of the major flaws in Facebook. Managing friends is difficult in Facebook in ways like:
- Information that you share is shared with all of your friends, and can’t be specific.
- When you have a lot of friends on your personal account, you hesitate a lot in sharing any kind of information.
- The groups and friends’ list in Facebook make the whole friend management process ambiguous and confusing.
The Plus of Google+:
The point, at which Facebook lacks, is the point which Google+ captured and made it its strength. The Circle feature of Google+ allows you to:
- Manage your friends efficiently
- Decide what you want to share with which group of friends
- The best benefit of it is for online marketing, now you don’t need any web marketing services provider to do marketing for you, instead you can do your marketing yourself by using your personal account.
Besides this major feature of Circles, there are other features of Google+ that make it unique and distinct from other social media platforms, a few of which are discussed below:
Behavioral Assistance:
One of the other plus points of Google+ is that it understands the behavior of the user and tries to provide management assistance accordingly:
- The type of content you share, and whom you share it with, goes into the brain of Google+, and next time when you share content, it gives you suggestions on whom to share the content with.
- The Gmail integration of Google+ also assesses your behavior, like the top contact to which you email, appear in your Google+ profile and you can send invites to them.
Privacy:
The ultimate concern of a user whenever using a social media platform is the privacy the platform provides. In Gmail, Google reads the text of your email that is why you see relevant ads beside your email. Therefore, when you permit Google to read your sharing on Google+, then Google+ would:
- On the basis of the topic you are sharing, Google+ may refer to you other people that are doing same type of sharing.
- Besides referring you to people, Google+ may also refer you to other groups or pages, which share the same kind of information.
- The key thing for the suggestion system to work is that, you have to permit Google to screen through your information; otherwise, it won’t give you any referrals.
Real Sharing:
Google is the creator of Google+; therefore, Google+ has more access to real information of user, like access to his Gmail account, different blogs on which the user does link building, and different groups which the user follows, etc. Whereas, Facebook does not have any such access, it is only limited to what the user shares.
Conclusion:
Like any other social media, Google+ will also take time to grow, but it would be imprudent to say that it will be a ‘Facebook killer’, rather Facebook will show frequent updates to compete with Google+’s innovation.

I agree about the circle feature. It’s much better than the list segmentation that Facebook offers. I once blasted a message to all of my family members about a big dinner we were having and my entire list of 800 people got the invite.
I previously used Facebook but I’m slowly moving towards Google + now because it kind of looks cleaner to me. I mean on Facebook it is too cluttered up. I am referring to the interface now. Plus Google + has a white background which makes it more Web 2.0
The hard part is that some of my friends do not want to move to a new network just because it is new. I’m dreaming of all my Facebook contacts moving to Google+ so that I can have all of them handy when I need to contact someone. Thanks my take on it. It’s just IMHO.
